Poor drainage:

On a wet day walk around the yard and look for areas where water collects. This can be an especially bad sign if there are soggy areas near the home's foundation. The lawn should be sloped away from the house. This encourages rain and water to flow away from the foundation. Excessive moisture can cause cracks in a home's foundations. Also, look at the drainage ducts on the roof of the home are they clear from obstruction. Are they in need of repair? Halifax receives a fair amount of rain these are important considerations.
